Term 2 was a very busy term for Primary 1H. The pupils made good progress with number work as we progressed with addition and some subtraction. They have begun writing and some pupils are making a great effort when sounding out words for themselves. We enjoyed our topic work on Pumpkin Soup before we started lots of Christmas crafts. I was delighted with how well the pupils performed our concert song – “Starry Night” with Primary 1M. During Term 2 we also had a very successful trip to Thurso Tesco. The pupils enjoyed learning about where food comes from and even got some samples to taste! We also got to visit Santa’s Grotto before the holidays which was lots of fun.
This term we will continue to progress with word building, rhyming and independent story writing and news diaries. Children will be supported with independent writing and our main writing targets will be finger spaces and sounding words carefully. We will continue with handwriting; encouraging correct formation, size and placement on the line. Reading will continue to be taught in class Monday to Thursday through the Highland Literacy Project format. This term pupils will be learning new “key words” for the Ginn Reading Scheme. Please support your child with this at home.
Show and Tell will continue to be every Monday morning. Please take a note of when your child’s turn is. I was delighted with the effort some pupils went to present information and describe items they had brought in.

This term we will be learning about keeping safe and the dangers of electricity in the home.
We plan to begin our topic work next week. This is going to be a surprise for the children but we will send home more information in due course!
This term we will try to create a bit of variety in homework tasks. Reading will be taught in class and reinforced at home. Word boxes will be heard on a Tuesday and Friday and Maths homework will now be given from time to time to reinforce what is being taught in class. I will hand out Maths homework on a Monday and it will be due in on the Friday unless stated otherwise.
Talk Homework – This term pupils will begin weekly “Talk Homework.” As detailed in the leaflet about Little Big Writing (handed out at the beginning of Primary 1) “talk” is central in developing successful independent writing in pupils. These tasks are designed to be discussed, not written down, and will support your child’s writing ideas for the writing lesson that particular week.
Health and Well-Being
P.E. will be on a Tuesday and Friday. It is most helpful is a gym kit is left in school at all times. All jewellery must be removed for P.E lessons.
Another reminder to ensure that you have named all of your child’s clothing and belongings.
If you have any worries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school to arrange an appointment to see me.
