Term 1 – The pupils are now getting used to the routines of Primary 1 and are making progress with their learning. They have made progress with Jolly Phonics sounds, reading and learning numbers to 10. Please continue to revise these at home to ensure they are consolidated. If you would like any advice on how best to support your child at home then please get in touch.
This term will focus on continuing our Jolly Phonics sounds and ensuring they are consolidated before continuing with word building. We will then spend more time focusing on rhyming and developing our writing. We have already begun story writing and news writing. At the moment a lot of emphasis is being put on the drawing stage and adding more detail to pictures. Gradually pupils will attempt to add writing to accompany their work.
As detailed in the Little Big Writing leaflet, (which can be viewed on the school website,) we will place a large emphasis on talking and encouraging the pupils to sound words for themselves. Most weeks pupils will be given some “Talk Homework” towards the beginning of the week. This will be given on a sticker which will be given to pupils to put on their jumper. The “Talk Homework” will link in with their writing for that week (normally completed on a Friday) and it would be greatly beneficial to spend some time talking over the question/topic with your child.
Handwriting will continue to focus on the correct letter formation and increasing awareness of the differences between letter sizes. The order in which letters are taught is detailed on our school website page. Reading will continue to be taught in class Monday to Thursday using the Dandelion books. Please continue to learn and revise all of the “tricky” words for this scheme.
Show and Tell will be each Monday morning. Each child is encouraged to share with the class some news, or show something that is special to them. This term we will begin a rota system to ensure that everyone is given an opportunity to be involved. A sticker will be placed in their reading record detailing the date of their turn. If your child becomes very anxious about this please let me know. If necessary they could wait until Term 3 to have their turn.
This term we will continue to consolidate numbers to 10. We will be moving on to sequencing and numbers before, after, between. We will then move on to 1 or 2 more than/less than before addition and subtraction within 5. We will also be doing some data handling as part of our topic work.
This term we will be completing a variety of seasonal activities to tie in with Hallowe’en, Bonfire Night and Remembrance Day. We will also be completing work about the book “Supertato” by Sue Hendra. We will be exploring different vegetables, how they grow and where they come from. In December there will be all sorts of fun Christmas activities!
For Health we will be learning about personal hygiene; with particular focus on handwashing and tooth brushing. We will also be doing some work on friendships.
RME We will be learning about the Christmas story and how people celebrate Christmas.
P.E. will now be on a Tuesday and Thursday. It is most helpful is a gym kit is left in school at all times. All jewellery must be removed for P.E lessons. It is also helpful if children can wear something that they can independently change into and out of on these days.
Please ensure that you have named all of your child’s clothing and belongings. Due to the unpredictability of Caithness weather, please ensure your child brings a suitable outdoor jacket each day otherwise they will be unable to play outside with the other children.
Children are welcome to bring in a water bottle for using in the classroom. We would recommend that this has a sports cap to avoid any spillages. Please ensure it is just plain water and not flavoured or diluting juice.
