Term 3 was a busy one again for Primary 1. We enjoyed taking part in the Science Festival events “Juiced” and “Ready, Teddy, Go!” All of the Primary 1 pupils began the Rainbow Reader scheme and have experienced success with their reading achievements. The pupils have really enjoyed getting certificates at assembly. Our Fairyland topic with Primary 1/2 was a great success! We are sad that Duncan can’t send us letters anymore but very glad that we helped create such a magnificent Fairyland in our classroom. A big thank you to all of the parents who came along to our Open Afternoon. We appreciate all of your kind feedback and take on board your comments.
This term we will continue to progress with word building, rhyming, independent story writing and news diaries. Children will be supported with independent writing and our main writing targets will be finger spaces and sounding words carefully. We will progress with our writing this term and introduce the idea of VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation.) This is part of the Big Writing scheme which is used from P2 upwards. We will continue with handwriting; encouraging correct formation, size and placement on the line. Reading will continue to be taught in class Monday to Thursday through the Highland Literacy Project format.
This term we will be working on the following:
· Consolidating addition and subtraction within 10
· Numbers to 20
· Telling the time – unfortunately we did not cover this in Term 3
· Comparing sizes
· Data handling
Science & Topic
Our topic during Term 4 will be Minibeasts. This will be a Science based topic. We will be learning about different types of Minibeasts and the environments they live in. We will also be learning about plants and what they need to grow and survive.
This term we will try to create a bit of variety in homework tasks. Reading will be taught in class and reinforced at home. Word boxes will be heard on a Tuesday and Friday and Maths homework will now be given from time to time to reinforce what is being taught in class. I will hand out Maths homework on a Monday and it will be due in on the Friday unless stated otherwise.
This term your child may also begin the Writing sheets to help develop their independent writing and ability to hear the sounds in words. These will be given as and when and there will be no pressure to complete a list per night.
This term there will be some dates when I am away from school:
Monday 27th April – away on Rock Challenge trip to Inverness – Mrs Anderson covering
Tuesday 5th May – Friday 8th May – away on P7 trip to Loch Eil – Mrs Anderson covering the Tues, Thurs and Fri. Miss Coghill as normal on the Wednesday of that week.
