Term 4 Information

Term 3 was a busy one again for Primary 1. We continued to progress with our writing and maths work. We are getting on well and working hard! We enjoyed Internet Safety Day and working with a Nursery buddy. World Book Day was lots of fun and we loved dressing up as a book character. We enjoyed taking part in the Science Festival events by James Soper and seeing the animals during Animal Magic. Our efforts for Sport Relief were great! We tried really hard and all managed to walk or run a mile! All of the Primary 1 pupils began the Rainbow Reader scheme and have experienced success with their reading achievements. The pupils have really enjoyed getting certificates at assembly. Our Circus topic with Primary 1H was a great success! A big thank you to all of the parents who came along to our Open Afternoon. We appreciate all of your kind feedback and take on board your comments.

Language

This term we will continue to progress with word building, rhyming, independent story writing and news diaries. Children will be supported with independent writing and our main writing targets will be finger spaces and sounding words carefully. We will progress with our writing this term and continue to teach the idea of VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation.) This is part of the Big Writing scheme which is used from P2 upwards. We will continue with handwriting; encouraging correct formation, size and placement on the line. Reading will continue to be taught in class Monday to Thursday through the Highland Literacy Project format.

Maths

This term we will be working on the following:

· Consolidating addition and subtraction within 10

· Numbers to 20

· Telling the time

· Money

· Measure – length, weight, capacity

Science & Topic

Our topic during Term 4 will be Minibeasts. This will be a Science based topic. We will be learning about different types of Minibeasts and the environments they live in. We will also be learning about plants and what they need to grow and survive.

Homework

This term we will continue to try to create a bit of variety in homework tasks. Reading will be taught in class and reinforced at home. Maths homework will be handed out on a Monday and it will be due in on the Friday unless stated otherwise (this will not be every week, but when appropriate for what we are working on in class.) This term your child has begun Homework Writing sheets to help develop their independent writing and ability to hear the sounds in words. These will be given each Friday and due for completion the following Friday. If however you complete the list before Friday a new list may be given. Tricky word lists have also begun this term. This will be assessed in class and a new list given home as appropriate.

Health and Well being

P.E. will continue to be on a Tuesday and Friday with P1H. It is most helpful is a gym kit is left in school at all times. All jewellery must be removed for P.E lessons.

Another reminder to ensure that you have named all of your child’s clothing and belongings.

We will continue to think about our feelings during circle time lessons. We will also be preparing for Primary 2 to support transition.
