Term 1 – I was very happy with how well the pupils settled into the routines of Primary 1. They have made great progress with their Jolly Phonics sounds, key words for reading and numbers to 10. Please continue to practise these at home to ensure they are consolidated.
This term will focus on completing our Jolly Phonics sounds and ensuring they are consolidated before moving on to word building. We will then be moving on to rhyming, story writing and introducing news story writing. Handwriting will continue to focus on the correct letter formation and we will progress on to size, proportion and position later in the term. Reading will continue to be taught in class Monday to Thursday through the Highland Literacy Project format. Information will be sent home as we move on to new stages.
Show and Tell will be each Monday morning. Each child is encouraged to share with the class some news, or show something that is special to them. This term we will begin a rota system to ensure that everyone is given an opportunity to be involved. Please take a note of your child’s turn. If your child becomes very anxious about this please let me know. If necessary they could wait until Term 3 to have their turn.

We will also be doing some data handling as part of our topic work.
Our main topic this term is a book study of Handa’s Surprise. We will be reading the story and doing lots of fun, related activities. We hope to have a tasting afternoon with lots of different fruits. In our classroom we will be having a fruit and vegetable shop as our role play area and we hope to create a wonderful Handa’s Surprise display.
RME – We will be learning about the Christmas story and how people celebrate Christmas.
P.E. will continue to be on a Wednesday and Friday. It is most helpful is a gym kit is left in school at all times. All jewellery must be removed for P.E lessons.
